Ontario reports 340 new COVID cases Friday

The report includes 149 recoveries and 18 deaths; sixteen of the deaths occurred more than six weeks ago, but were previously unreported

Public Health Ontario reported 340 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 6), which is the highest number of cases reported in a single day since June. 

The report includes 149 new recoveries and 18 deaths. Sixteen of the deaths occurred more than six weeks ago, but were previously unreported. 

The deaths include one person under 19 years old, 14 people between 60 and 79 years old, and three people over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday's report, 17 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and three were admitted to an intensive care unit.

The August 6 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,879 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 1,706 yesterday.
  • 114 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • There are 110 patients in intensive care units with COVID-related illness (of those, 30 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • 56 people are on ventilators due to COVID-related illness (of those, 20 no longer test positive for COVID-19).
  • The province reported 23,448 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 1.4 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 8,227 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.6 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 22 are from Waterloo, 80 are from Toronto, 36 cases are from Peel, seven are from Simcoe-Muskoka, 14 are from Grey-Bruce, and 41 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 92 individuals aged 19 and under, 156 people between 20 and 39 years old, 60 people between 40 and 59 years old, 28 people between 60 and 79 years old, and five people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 551,678 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 540,407 recoveries and 9,392 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,744.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 9.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 22.4 per cent from last week.

Vaccines

  • There were 53,975 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday.
  • 19,764,199 doses of vaccine have been administered.
  • In total, 9,231,765 people have been fully vaccinated.

Simcoe-Muskoka

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported ten new COVID cases

There are currently 38 active cases in the region. 

There are two people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,395 cases of COVID-19 with 12,102 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

Last week, the case incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka was four cases per 100,000 people over seven days, which is a decrease of 2.4 per cent from the week of July 21 to 27.
