Ontario reports 348 new COVID cases Tuesday

Public Health Ontario reported 348 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 17). 

Today's update noted 280 recoveries and 10 deaths, but six of the deaths occurred more than two months ago and were previously unreported. 

The August 17 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • New cases include 203 unvaccinated, 49 partially vaccinated, and 79 fully vaccinated.*
  • 3,930 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 3,872 yesterday.
  • 163 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • Hospitalized (non-ICU) cases include 32 unvaccinated, one partially vaccinated, and six fully vaccinated.
  • There are 98 COVID-positive people in intensive care units, another 29 patients in the ICU with COVID-related illness who no longer test positive for COVID-19.
  • ICU cases include 35 unvaccinated, six partially vaccinated, and one fully vaccinated.
  • 57 COVID-positive are on ventilators, and another 21 patients ventilated because of COVID no longer test positive.
  • The province reported 17,408 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.6 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 10,829 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.8 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 85 are from Toronto, 45 cases are from Peel, 14 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, four are from Grey-Bruce, and 32 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 37 individuals under 12 years old, 31 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 179 people between 20 and 39 years old, 71 people between 40 and 59 years old, 22 people between 60 and 79 years old, and eight people over 79 years old.

*Vaccination status breakdown may not include every new case because of missing health card data.

In total, 10,641,637 Ontarians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and of those, 9,612,865 people have been fully vaccinated (64 per cent). 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 556,435 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 543,077 recoveries and 9,428 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,776.5 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 20.4 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 56.9 per cent from the week of Aug. 1.

Simcoe-Muskoka

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 44 new COVID cases since Friday.

There are currently 123 active cases in the region. 

There are two people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,531 cases of COVID-19 with 12,153 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

Last week, the case incidence rate in Simcoe-Muskoka was 16.4 cases per 100,000 people over seven days, which is up by 169 per cent compared to the week of Aug. 1
