Ontario reports record 3,519 new COVID cases today

The province has also reported 89 deaths and 144 new hospitalizations today

Public Health Ontario has reported a record 3,566 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest number of new cases reported in a single day to date. 

The last case record was set Jan. 2 with 3,363 new cases reported. 

The province reported 89 deaths in today's update. Of those, 43 were residents of long-term care homes. Four of the deaths reported today were individuals between 40 and 59 years old, 24 were individuals between 60 and 79 years old, and 61 were over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday,144 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 22 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Today's two updates provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:

  • 2,776 new recoveries
  • 1,472 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,463 reported yesterday. This is the highest number of patients reported hospitalized with COVID during the pandemic. In the first wave, hospitalizations peaked at 1,043.
  • There are 363 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 361 yesterday) and 242 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 246 yesterday). 
  • 26,718 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 26,064 reported yesterday
  • The province reported 65,772 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 6.1 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent. 
  • There is a backlog of 66,970 tests awaiting processing.
  • Of the 3,519 cases reported today, 891 are from Toronto, 568 are from Peel, 457 are from York Region, and 78 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 448 people under 20, 1,289 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,051 people between 40 and 59 years old, 514 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 208 people over the age of 80.
  • There were 12,251 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 6, up from 10,000 on Jan. 5. 
  • To date the province reports 72,631 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • There are 2,173 total vaccinations completed (both doses). The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 204,145 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 172,571 recoveries and 4,856 deaths, of which 2,928 were individuals living in long-term care homes

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,373.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 144.3 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, which is up by 34.2 per cent compared to Dec. 22-28 when the average weekly incidence rate was 107.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Yesterday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported 87 new cases of COVID-19 in the region

The local health unit has now confirmed 3,973 cases of COVID-19 with 2,631 of those cases recovered and 70 cases ending in death. There are more than 1,200 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region, with the majority of those in Simcoe County.

At least 24 people from Simcoe County are hospitalized.

In Simcoe-Muskoka the weekly incidence rate is also on the rise with 70 cases per 100,000 people for the week of Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, which is up by 14.4 per cent compared to the week of Dec. 22 to 28 when the rate was 61.2 cases per 100,000 people.
