OPP close Highway 400 northbound to investigate crash involving police vehicle

One driver taken to hospital with minor injuries; OPP officer not injured following crash near Mapleview Drive exit

Provincial police closed Highway 400 northbound at Innisfil Beach Road following a collision involving an OPP vehicle in south-end Barrie, Tuesday evening.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said officers are on scene following the two-vehicle collision near Mapleview Drive in Barrie.

Schmidt said the officer was stopped on Highway 400 assisting another motorist whose vehicle had broken down on the side of the road.

"As the officer was outside of his vehicle speaking to the other motorist, another vehicle lost control approaching the area and slammed into the side and back of the stopped police vehicle," Schmidt said Tuesday night.

The driver whose Honda collided with the OPP vehicle was taken to hospital with what Schmidt said appear to be minor injuries.

The OPP officer was not injured, nor was anyone else at the scene.

Provincial police say motorists should expect delays as they approach Barrie tonight.

"Officers are trying to determine exactly what took place," Schmidt said.

As of 9:30 p.m., the highway remains closed approaching Barrie from Innisfil.

Traffic volume is also heavier than usual on roads in south-end Barrie as drivers exit the 400 and get back on the highway north of the crash scene.

BarrieToday will have more information as it becomes available.
