Orillia fitness studio finds new space after outgrowing owner's basement

YJDanceFit holds grand opening at 121 Atherley Rd.; community invited to open house Sunday

After five years running her fitness and dance studio out of her basement, YJ Hong-McParland is moving on up.

The owner of YJDanceFit held a grand opening Thursday at her new location, 121 Atherley Rd., in the plaza at the corner of Atherley Road and Gill Street.

“I wanted to work with more people. Space was limited at my house,” she said. “They’ll feel comfortable here in a space where we can work together.”

Hong-McParland is trained in a number of disciplines, including ballet, jazz dance, modern dance, Latin dance and hip-hop dance. As well, she is certified in bootybarre, Zumba, TRX and other areas of fitness instruction.

Her clients come to her for various reasons.

“They want to lose weight. They want to be flexible. They have their own fitness goals and I want to help them,” she said. “They come in as clients and we become friends. They’re like family.”

One of the services she offers is mom-and-baby workouts.

“When I moved to Orillia from Korea, there wasn’t anything like that, so I started one,” she said.

She also has a yoga instructor, Jacob Dickinson, who will be leading sessions out of Hong-McParland’s new space.

Members of the community can check it out for themselves during an open house Sunday, when they’ll get to take part in free sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will also have the chance to win an unlimited membership for the month of December. More on that event can be found here.
