"Impaired drivers are, unfortunately, still persisting to get behind the wheel of their vehicle, and drive on our roadways and in the process they are creating a highway of hell," says Doug Abernethy, founder of Orillia Against Drunk Driving (OADD).

"It seems there still persists a segment of society who, for whatever reason, can't seem to understand that driving impaired is not only criminal, but puts the safety of everyone on the road at risk," said Abernethy.

"When a person is caught driving impaired, it is highly unlikely that this is the first time they have driven in an impaired condition. To believe this is the first time most of these impaired drivers have driven impaired would be a myth, and a fairy tale. It is more likely that it is the first time these impaired drivers were caught driving in an impaired condition," said Abernethy.

It is important for communities throughout Ontario to continue to reach out, and that the public stays involved as they have been and continue to report suspicious driving behaviours to their local police in a safe manner so that we can work together to reduce the related traffic deaths and injuries and keep our roadways and highways safe, Abernethy said.

OADD works to help deter drivers from drinking before getting behind the wheel. The program asks any citizen to immediately report suspected impaired drivers to the OPP - cellphone users can dial *OPP (*677) or call 1-888-310-1122.
