NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF ORILLIA
*************************
The natatorium (aquatic area) at the Orillia Recreation Centre will be undergoing annual maintenance beginning on Aug. 20, 2022.

“To keep the three pools maintained appropriately for the enjoyment of our community, the aquatic area of the Orillia Recreation Centre will be temporarily closed until Sept. 19,” said Mayor Steve Clarke.

“The aquatic centre has been enormously popular and has quickly become a prime location for fitness, play, and training. Annual maintenance is typical for municipal aquatic facilities and is an important part of keeping our natatorium functional for our community in the long-term," said Clarke.

"We appreciate everyone’s patience while the work is completed and look forward to welcoming the community back to the aquatic centre on Sept. 19.”

The aquatic area (maintenance) will include annual draining and cleaning of pools, cleaning under the moveable floor, and leisure pool features maintenance.

During the maintenance period all aquatic drop-in programming will be cancelled. Fun Pass holders who do not wish to utilize other amenities within the facility during the pool closure can request a membership pause. Aquatic centre user groups have also been contacted to advise of the closure.

“Pools require annual maintenance to extend their life and to help minimize issues throughout the year,” said Christine Wareing, Aquatic and Fitness Supervisor. “Due to this being our first pool closure since opening fully, we will be a little longer in duration than what is typical to accommodate the number of items requiring maintenance. We will be reviewing timelines for future annual maintenance.”

The Orillia Recreation Centre has had heavy usage with approximately 2,000 people coming in to use the facility daily. During the aquatic area maintenance period, the community is encouraged to engage with the other amenities the Orillia Recreation Centre has to offer, including the 5,000 sq. ft. fitness centre, the FIBA-sized gymnasium, the wide variety of drop-in and registered programs for all ages, sport drop-ins and leagues, and the walking/jogging track.
