Orillia resident dies of COVID-19; Five new cases in city today

There are two new cases in Severn, two new cases in Oro-Medonte and one new case in Ramara among the 108 new cases being reported today

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reporting 108 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its latest update published Tuesday, Dec. 15.

An Orillia man over 79 years old died on Dec. 13 after contracting COVID-19. He is the 10th Orillian to die since the onset of the pandemic in March of 2020.

There are now 26 local cases of COVID-19 that are "most likely" the omicron variant. The health unit confirmed preliminary testing confirmed the presence of the mutations, and full genome sequencing is underway to confirm the variant strain. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County today are as follows:  

  • Orillia (5): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 5 and 79 years old. One case is outbreak-related, and the rest are still under investigation. 
  • Severn (2): One person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are still under investigation. 
  • Oro-Medonte (2): One youth under. 18years old and one person between 45 and 64 years old. Both cases are still under investigation. 
  • Ramara (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • Collingwood (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation.
  • Barrie (42): Twelve youth under 18 years old, 13 people between 18 and 34 years old, eight people between 35 and 44 years old, eight people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are outbreak-related, and one case is linked to close contact. The rest of the cases are still under investigation. 
  • Springwater (9): Five youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, and three people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact, and three cases are outbreak-related. The rest of the cases are still under investigation. 
  • Innisfil (6): Five youth under 18 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related, and one is listed as community-acquired (no known link). The rest of the cases are still under investigation. 
  • Bradford (11): Four youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, and one person over 79 years old. Two cases are listed as community-acquired (no known link), one is outbreak-related, two cases are linked to close-contact transmission, and the rest are still under investigation. 
  • Midland (7): Four youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close-contact transmission, one is listed as community-acquired ( no known link), and the rest are still under investigation. 
  • Essa (8): Three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and four people between 45 and 64 years old. One case is outbreak-related, one is linked to close-contact transmission, and the rest are under investigation. 
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is still under investigation. 
  • New Tecumseth (7): Five people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between. 35and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. All the cases are still under investigation.
  • Muskoka (6): Two in Bracebridge, one in Huntsville, two in Gravenhurst, and one in Georgian Bay Township.

Included in the new cases reported today are 57 unvaccinated, five partially vaccinated, and 46 fully vaccinated people. 

There are 886 active cases in the region. 

Hospitalizations include 19 people from Simcoe County and two from Muskoka Region. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 16,920 cases of COVID-19 with 15,751 of those cases recovered and 283 cases ending in death. 

About 75 per cent of the entire population of Simcoe-Muskoka has been fully vaccinated. Currently, 84 per cent of the population that is five years of age or older has received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine. 

Over the last eight weeks, health unit data indicates the rate of infection for unvaccinated, vaccine-eligible population of Simcoe-Muskoka is seven times higher than for the fully vaccinated population. The hospitalization rate is 16 times higher for unvaccinated vs. vaccinated. 

Since mid-October, there have been 67 unvaccinated individuals from Simcoe-Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19. Over the same period, there were 10 partially vaccinated and 26 fully vaccinated individuals hospitalized with COVID-19.
