ORILLIA TERRY FOX RUN COMMITTEE

A new community run location, an online auction, and a postcard campaign highlight Terry Fox Week in the City of Orillia Sept. 11 to 17.

Mayor Don McIsaac will join the all-volunteer Orillia Terry Fox Run committee and cancer survivors Monday to raise the Terry Fox flag at the Orillia Opera House, launching Terry Fox Week. A proclamation encourages members of council, citizens, and visitors to participate in the annual fundraiser for cancer research.

This year, everyone is invited to submit their reflections as #DearTerry messages or post them online. To share your #DearTerry message, pick up and drop off your personalized ‘Dear Terry’ postcards at the Orillia Farmers’ Market (downtown) on Saturday morning, at Audie’s Hair Design and Midas Orillia or at the Orillia Terry Fox Run at Tudhope Park, or share on social using #DearTerry and tagging @terryfoxfoundation and #TerryFoxRunOrillia.

All #DearTerry postcards submitted locally or online using the #TerryFoxRunOrillia hashtag before 3 p.m. on Terry Fox Run day — Sunday, Sept. 17 — will be entered in a draw for a 2023 Terry Fox Run T-shirt.

During the first post-pandemic Orillia Terry Fox Run in 2022, participants and volunteers raised a record $51,222.56 for the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research. That surpassed its $1-per-Orillia resident goal for the 14th consecutive year, bringing the cumulative total raised to $905,248.24.

“There’s still time to register and fundraise securely online at run.terryfox.ca/orillia, which makes everyone’s run day experience easier than ever,” says volunteer run organizer and cancer survivor Alison Stoneman.

“Our all-volunteer committee has been working hard with the City of Orillia to ensure everyone knows we are at Tudhope Park this year and that our run day participants and volunteers can still do what they do best — raise money for vital cancer research.”

This year’s T-shirt — designed in collaboration with actor and Terry Fox supporter Ryan Reynolds — and other merchandise and run information are available in advance at the Orillia Farmers’ Market (downtown) on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Terry Fox Week includes distribution of lawn signs in accordance with the city’s bylaws and an online auction of goods and services donated by individuals and businesses in Orillia through the Terry Fox Run Orillia Facebook page.

Terry Fox Runs will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17 in Orillia, Gravenhurst, Barrie, Heart of Georgian Bay (Midland area), Sugarbush (Oro-Medonte), Lagoon City-Brechin, Beaverton and across Canada.
