The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has joined forces with the Better Ballot Campaign during the 2019 federal election.

The Better Ballot Campaign is a non-partisan grass-roots initiative working to bring civility and respect to our political discussions. The campaign is not about electing specific candidates or political parties. It is a way to encourage more diverse voices in politics.

The Better Ballot Campaign is asking Canadians to stand together for civil discussion and respectful debate during the 2019 election.

The Campaign seeks to ensure that all Canadians feel welcome and able to participate safely in political and public life. Together, we can encourage more diverse voices in our legislatures, civic forums and boardrooms.

CFUW Orillia has contacted the candidates of Simcoe North to introduce them to this initiative.

The candidates are asked to sign a pledge stating that they support positive, issue-based campaigns; will never personally attack any candidate or citizen; and, do not support people or organizations that do attack anyone based on gender, race, appearance, religion or status.

Simcoe North candidates Bruce Stanton (Conservative), Gerry Hawes (Liberal), Stephen Makk (People's Party of Canada) and Chris Brown (Christian Heritage Party) have signed the pledge. There is not yet a declared candidate in Simcoe North for either the Green or NDP parties.

Voters are encouraged to sign a similar pledge. Eligible voters can go to www.thebetterballot.ca to complete their pledge. The pledge is designed to build a positive political environment that gets people talking about what is really important.
