At the History Speaker Evening at the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH) on Oct. 16, Leanne Young, Canada and World Studies Chair at Orillia Secondary School (OSS), and her students, will speak about their recent trip to Ortona, Beny-sur-Mer and Juno.

First, Leanne will speak briefly about making history relevant in the 21st century and how history prepares students for world experiences. Leanne is currently a finalist for the prestigious Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The students will speak on different aspects of their trip - two students will give us an overview of the total experience and one will speak specifically about visiting Beny-sur-Mer where soldiers from Orillia are buried. The students left special mementos at the graves of these Orillia’s soldiers. The final speaker will tell us how the Vimy and Juno trips have shaped his life.

Doors open at 7 p.m. The talks start at 7:30 p.m. Please join us for a memorable evening. Admission is free, donations to OMAH are gratefully accepted.

On Wednesday, Nov. 20 Fred Kallin will present his talk “Raoul Wallenberg: Legendary Hero.” Learn how Swede Raoul Wallenberg selflessly saved thousands of Hungarian Jews in 1944. Also hear Fred’s story of his father, who is credited with saving the lives of many soldiers in Japanese internment camps.

Tickets to the Annual Sir John A. Macdonald Dinner being held at the Hawk Ridge Golf and Country Club on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 will be available for purchase following Kallin’s talk.

Cash and cheques are accepted. Our speaker with local roots, Dr. Kevin Kee, will speak about innovative ways to see our past. Thereafter tickets are available at the OMAH front desk where cash, cheques and credit cards are accepted. Last year the popular annual event sold out before Christmas so don’t delay.

For further information call OMAH AT 705-326-2159.
