Has technology erased the desire to curl up with a good book - to just enjoy a story or to learn something new? Are libraries and book stores remnants of the past or are they enjoying a welcome resurgence as we move toward the future?
“Books, Books, Books, and Everything Related” will be the topic explored by CFUW Orillia members as they listen to and interact with Michael Fredson from Manticore Books at their monthly virtual meeting on Feb. 23.
Fredson is originally from Hamilton. He studied Science at the University of Guelph and worked there for 11 years, then moved to Orillia when his partner, Thamara, accepted a position at Lakehead University.
In 2013, they became the proud owners of Manticore Books on Mississaga Street and since that time have increased the visibility of this unique and independent book store, the largest north of Toronto.
Besides being involved in the book store, Fredson and his partner are “the parents to two busy, crazy, wonderful boys.”
Fredson firmly believes that books are a welcome respite from screen time and the modern hectic pace and the success of his business has proved that people still need and love books. It is certain that if anyone is looking for a particular book or one that piques their interest, it can be found at Manticore Books.
