'People love the food': New burger, wings joint opens on West St.

'We are going to keep bringing in new and different menu items as time goes on and it should help us grow,' says owner who hopes to turn eatery into a franchise

Westreet Burger & Wings is planning to put Orillia on the map.

The restaurant that offers up 40 flavours of wings is co-owned by Danes Kandasamy, a Toronto native. The 35-year-old also owns Swirleez Frozen Yogurt and Chillz Lounge in Barrie.

“Originally I wanted to open up another frozen yogurt business here in Orillia at the waterfront,” he explained. “But then I came across this unit on West Street and I thought a burger restaurant would better serve this area.”

Previously, Kandasamy owned a burger joint in Ajax before selling the successful business. He then moved to Orillia in March to start his new potential franchise.

“We have been doing really well here,” he said. “Much better than I ever expected.”

Kandasamy says people have been spreading the word about his business which has made it a big hit.

“People are really liking our fresh wings,” he said. “People like how many wing flavours we have.”

While the food comes from a manufacturer in Toronto, Kandasamy says the burger resembles a butchershop style.

“It’s a frozen burger,” he said. “But they are more flavourful and juicier than most, and it’s all Canadian.”

Kandasamy’s goal is to turn Westreet Burgers & Wings into one of Canada’s biggest franchises.

“We are looking into a location in Barrie already,” he said. “All our future burger and wing franchises will be called Westreet, named after this street, here in Orillia.”

Kandasamy says he is "very confident" that his business will one day be enjoyed by people throughout Canada.

“People love the food,” he said, noting it can be ordered through DoorDash, SkipTheDishes, and Uber Eats. “We are going to keep bringing in new and different menu items as time goes on and it should help us grow.”

Kandasamy encourages customers to stay tuned to the restaurant's Instagram account for the date of its grand opening where there will be an opportunity to try some potential new wing flavours. Westreet Burger & Wings also plans on offering smoothies and bubble tea starting next month.
