Pirate Party draws a crowd to Port of Orillia (17 photos)

Second annual event continues Sunday

Skulls and crossbones were everywhere Saturday at the Port of Orillia, signalling the arrival of the second annual Pirate Party.

Pirates battled it out on Lake Couchiching and people walked the plank for a good cause — the restoration of the Rotary Aqua Theatre.

“The pirates have taken over the port,” said Allan Lafontaine, managing director of the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce, which operates the port.

He estimated there were about five times the number of people taking in the event, compared to last year.

“It’s been fantastic. For Year 2, I couldn’t be happier,” he said.

The port sold out of its slips, and that’s good news for local businesses, Lafontaine noted, as many boaters and visitors ventured downtown.

“We really do it right in Orillia,” he said.

The fun continues Sunday. Check out the schedule of events here.
