NEWS RELEASE
RAMARA TOWNSHIP PUBLIC LIBRARY
*************************
In a forward-thinking move, the Ramara Township Public Library has made the decision to do away with overdue fines effective Tuesday, July 4, becoming the latest library to embrace the fine-free movement.
Following in the footsteps of the 101 other fine-free libraries across the province, this decision aims to create a more inclusive and accessible space for community members seeking resources.
Research has shown that overdue fines pose barriers for vulnerable populations, discouraging them from using library services and restricting their access to valuable materials. Additionally, the costs associated with managing fines outweigh the revenue they bring in.
“By removing fines, we hope to encourage our past and new members to return/join the library and explore the multitude of resources we have to offer,” explained Janet Banfield, the library’s CEO.
All existing overdue fines have been waived from cardholders’ accounts, while fees for lost or damaged materials will remain in effect. Borrowed items will still have due dates, and patrons will receive reminders and requests for the prompt return of materials, ensuring a smooth circulation process.
Under the new policy, any items that are not returned within 45 days from the due date will be considered lost, and patrons will be responsible for a replacement fee. Library accounts with one or more lost items will be temporarily suspended from borrowing more physical materials until the items are returned or the fee is paid.
Janet Banfield, CEO, states, “This decision aligns with the library’s purpose to inspire learning, connections, and discovery. By removing the burden of overdue fines, the Ramara Public Library is committed to fostering a positive borrowing experience where everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can freely access resources that enrich their lives.”
To offset the loss in revenue that would have been generated through overdue fines, the library will be organizing various fundraising initiatives. Those who wish to support the library financially can make cash or cheque donations, which are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
