Alexander Tweedle of Ramara is the latest Soldiers’ 50/50 grand prize winner, collecting $26,828 in the January draw.

"Are you serious?” Tweedle repeatedly asked when he received the winners call from Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) Foundation. His wife Mary joined in and, once they were convinced it was not a prank, asked the most pressing question, “when can we come pick it up?”

The Tweedles purchased Soldiers’ 50/50 tickets because they wanted to support OSMH, their local hospital that they rely on. Their son prompted Alexander to increase his ticket bundle, a purchase that has paid off for the Tweedle family.

The win was a terrific surprise birthday present for Alexander, who had turned 80 just a few days earlier. The Tweedles plan on spending some of their prize money on a trip to Cape Breton, where Mary is from. They also plan on sharing their prize with their two children.

The Soldiers’ 50/50 February raffle is underway, and tickets are available to purchase online. There will be two early bird prizes of $1,000, drawn on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 respectfully. The grand prize draw deadline will be Thursday, Feb. 22 at 11:59 p.m. and ticket bundles start at just $10.

Soldiers’ 50/50 raffle is managed by the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital Foundation and works to generate funding for areas of emerging need within Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital.
