Resident transported to hospital, dog dies in Westmount fire

Firefighter, on his first day on the job, helped save the resident, said fire chief; fire marshal's office is investigating cause of the afternoon blaze

One resident was transported to hospital, but his dog died in a structure fire on Westmount Drive South Thursday afternoon.

Orillia Fire received a call at 2:28 p.m. about a residential fire at the corner of Westmount Drive South and George Street, near Harriett Todd Public School, said Fire Chief Michael Clark.

He said the fire in the multi-unit building was contained to the unit of origin.

Clark did not provide details as to the cause of the fire, but said investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal will be attending to determine its cause.

Clark said the resident was saved by two relatively new firefighters, including one who just started today.

"The man seemed initially like he may not be breathing when they took him out," Clark said. "The firefighters gave him oxygen and he started to come around. He was asking about his dog before he was transported to the hospital."
