The City’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) is looking for volunteers to help clean up the City as part of Pitch-In week (April 22-29), a national campaign to clean up the environment.
To kick things off, on Saturday, April 21, EAC will be set up at Veterans’ Park from 9 a.m. to noon to provide free Pitch-In garbage bags and to register and deploy volunteers to clean up green spaces, parks and neighbourhoods across the City. There is no need to register ahead of time; volunteers are urged to show up at 9 a.m. ready to go, rain or shine.
The Saturday kick-off is lead annually by local naturalist, Bob Bowles. For many years, Bowles had organized a spring trail cleanup, and he’s hoping for many in Orillia to join in and participate during the Saturday clean up and beyond.
“We encourage everyone to take time out of their week to pitch in and help clean up the garbage that has accumulated over the winter in the community,” said Bowles.
In addition, EAC Members Jeff Cole and Tyler Hunt are organizing the week-long clean up from April 23 to 27 throughout the City by volunteers from various local community groups. Groups are asked to register by April 13 by contacting Robin Cadeau at [email protected] or 705-329-2452.
Volunteers are the backbone of Pitch-In Week. Last year, in more than 750 Canadian communities, more than 1.5 million volunteers participated in various environmental clean-ups and other events.
