How would it impact your life to be able to download a movie in one second?

This week, Rogers Communications announced it is expanding its 5G service to reach residents and businesses in nine more communities across Ontario, including Orillia.

“This is great news for the City of Orillia,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “With Rogers’ announcement and with Bell's presence of true fibre in our city, we find ourselves in roughly the top 10 per cent of municipalities that possess this type of internet capability.”

Clarke said increased internet speeds will benefit residents as well as businesses.

“This is especially good news for our existing businesses and businesses who may want to locate here, who will be able to download at speeds of 500mbs to 1.5gps,” he said. “In addition, this announcement is very timely for the many people working remotely from their company and those completing online schooling.”

“Having much greater speeds being offered by both Rogers and Bell gives Orillians more choice and, of course, with more choice, more competitiveness,” he added.

According to Rogers, more than 2.2 million Canadians are on 5G-ready Rogers Infinite unlimited data plans.

“5G networks will be a critical building block for Canadian entrepreneurs and researchers to build world-class applications that will fuel productivity and innovation for Ontario and the country. This next generation technology will provide the digital platform and capabilities that our industries need to continue to grow and have a lasting impact on Canadian prosperity," said Jorge Fernandes, chief technology officer at Rogers Communications.

In addition to providing Canadians with the latest technology, wireless industry investments in 5G networks are expected to contribute an estimated $40 billion annually to the country’s economy and 250,000 permanent new jobs by 2026.
