The Rotary Club of Orillia held a toy drive to donate to the Salvation Army for local community members in need this year.

We decided as a club that in lieu of our Chris Kringle gift exchange that we usually have at our annual Charter Night dinner, we would donate to a toy drive. We called the Salvation Army to see what age was most in need of gifts. We focused on 10- to 15-year-olds.

We collected donations of toys over three weeks and our Rotary Local Needs Committee also donated money toward purchasing gifts for the toy drive. In total, we donated around 70 toys and crafts, etc. We focused on purchasing toys from local businesses.

Part of our vision statement is to promote service in our community and we knew the need was higher than ever this year to give back to our community in these trying times for those needing donations and to support our local businesses.

We are continually brainstorming ways in which we can help our community at this time. Our next focus will be to help our local restaurants through a joint effort of fundraising for our Rotary Local Needs Committee while supporting local restaurants with a Rotary Meal Take Out Tuesday campaign starting mid-January. For more information on that initiative, email Paula Hill-Coulson at [email protected].
