Orillia City Councillor Luke Leatherdale and his partner are shown at a Severn Township property Wednesday. Leatherdale says he was accompanying his partner to help promote her business.

A Severn Township resident took to social media today to shed light on a "strange encounter" with unknown visitors to their Hawk Ridge Crescent home.

Chris Strong made a post on his Facebook page warning people about a couple who appeared to be going door-to-door in the neighbourhood. The couple did not knock on doors, but rather left a "weird hand-printed note" asking residents if they wanted someone to read to them.

“It honestly felt like they were casing the house and the ‘flyer’ was a feeble attempt to create a reason for being there if they got questioned,” read Strong’s social media post, which included photos of the couple in question.

It turns out the man pictured in the post is Orillia city Councillor Luke Leatherdale and his girlfriend.

Leatherdale told OrilliaMatters he was simply accompanying his partner as she promoted her business.

“I was accompanying my girlfriend as we were promoting her business, which is reading books and novels to the elderly,” he told OrilliaMatters. “We do that by distributing her handmade business cards, basically, and I was accompanying her just because I always do to make sure she's OK.”

He said there was no ill-intent to their visit to the Severn resident’s home.

“It was some sort of misunderstanding,” he said. “It was something completely innocent – it's just to try to build her business.”

Mayor Don McIsaac declined to provide a comment for this story.
