SEVERN - As COVID-19 continues to progress and residents are urged to remain socially distanced, the Township of Severn has launched a series of monthly challenges on social media to engage residents, build community ambassadorship, and celebrate the spirit of all that is Severn.

Beginning in January with the Severn Snowman challenge and coasting into February with the Heart of Severn challenge, monthly themes—including those to come—are designed by the Culture and Recreation Advisory Committee with safety in mind, encouraging residents to get involved without compromising their safety or the safety of others.

“We know it can be challenging to find new ways of connecting with the community given the circumstances, but we think these initiatives provide both an outlet for creativity and a source of inspiration for looking at Severn with new eyes,” says Mayor Mike Burkett. “It’s our hope that residents will participate in these activities independently, with members of the same household, or from a safe social distance on a regular basis, if only to break up the monotony of a challenging year for all.”

As March approaches, a new theme—Walk Your Ward—will be introduced to celebrate Severn as a community of communities. To participate, residents are urged to explore their wards on foot, pausing to take pictures of their favourite locations and destinations while en route. From there, images can be uploaded to social media (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) using the hashtag #WalkYourWard for a chance to be featured.

"There is so much to see, do and explore within Severn’s five wards—so much of which is unknown to or overlooked by those who’ve yet to visit,” says Pat Harwood, manager of recreation and facilities. “This new challenge is a wonderful way to start illuminating some of these things while helping residents break up the doldrums of winter.”
