Sharing Place bids farewell to 'selfless' operations manager

Food centre seeking replacement upon retirement of Bruce Duncan, who 'would, and has, given the shirt off his back to those in need'

The operations manager at The Sharing Place Food Centre is retiring.

Bruce Duncan, a man that truly defines selfless commitment to community, has decided it is time to retire his post as operations manager.

The Sharing Place has seen significant growth and change over the past five years, moving from a small, 4,000-square-foot facility to a larger, 12,000-square-foot facility, creating a food recovery program that picks up over 450,000 pounds of food a year, and establishing a School Fuel program that delivers food to 23 local schools and feeds over 4,200 kids a day.

We have gone from 50 volunteers to over 110 volunteers, each helping to deliver and improve our programs. We have undergone significant renovations to our facility and maintained an exceptional, clean, efficient, and safe operation. We were on the front lines of the pandemic, creating new procedures and food distribution models to ensure the community maintained access to healthy food.

Each and every part of our progress and operational achievements were made possible by Bruce. The get-r-done attitude that Bruce brings to his role at The Sharing Place is second to none, though that is not his best quality. Where Bruce shines the most is his ability to provide kindness, support, and dignity to those with which he engages. He would, and has, given the shirt off his back to those in need. He makes sure that he is putting smiles on people’s faces while he goes about his work.

It’s rare to see him resting or engaging in small chat because he is all about getting stuff done. But for all that hard work and dedication, he always finds time to make sure people are having fun and feel supported. He will be missed more than he will know, but we know Bruce will not be a stranger and he will continue to get stuff done. Hopefully, he doesn’t drive his wife, Kathy, too crazy, but I am sure she will keep that honey-do list alive and well.

It is now time for a new chapter at The Sharing Place and to bring in a new operations manager that can continue the momentum of maintaining an exceptional operation while providing dignity and respect to all with whom we work.

With the growth of our School Fuel program, local food procurement, food recovery and development of a new commercial kitchen, The Sharing Place is looking for an important new member of our team that can help us grow our impact. If you are interested or know someone who would be interested in the role of operations manager at The Sharing Place, please check out our job posting on Indeed. It is an exceptional opportunity to have a fulfilling career with an organization that will support your development.

We look forward to welcoming a new member of our team into our community as we continue to improve the programs and services at The Sharing Place.
