MIDHURST – The delivery of a trio of carts to all eligible County of Simcoe households continues to ramp up in preparation for the roll-out of the new automated cart collection system starting Nov. 1, 2021. Between August and the end of October, almost a half million carts will be delivered to area households and businesses as the County introduces a new, easy and safe system to collect waste from our laneways and curbs.

Approximately 60,000 carts have already been delivered in the region. Once received, residents should store their new carts and continue to use current containers or bags until the launch of the new collection system in November. After Nov. 1, carts will be required to set out materials curbside and the old system of bags, boxes and open containers will no longer be accepted, except for overflow materials. Current boxes can be retained for overflow materials, repurposed for household use or may be recycled for free at County landfills after Nov. 1.

These new carts offer many ergonomic advantages that make it quicker and easier for residents to wheel materials to the curb each week. In addition, the extra capacity for organics and consolidated recycling will help with our diversion and capture rates, while lids will cut down on windblown litter in our ditches and roadways.

“The delivery of carts is a significant process and we thank our residents for your patience as we deliver carts to approximately 150,000 addresses,” said Warden George Cornell. “We look forward to joining so many other municipalities just like ours in offering automated cart collection to our residents. We know many of our households are looking forward to the added conveniences and benefits of this new system, while we are also confident that this method of collection will limit service delays and misses due to the labour shortages experienced in the past. We are also listening to input from our communities, and will be offering a public feedback program after the program launches to determine if any adjustments are needed to better serve our residents.”

Cart Delivery Information:

  • Residents who have downloaded the free Simcoe County Collects app will receive a notification when delivery is occurring in their area

  • For the majority of residents, carts will be left at the end of your driveway. For our rural residents, where possible, carts will be delivered to the end of individual laneways, but some seasonal locations or other areas that have common neighbourhood collection points may have their carts dropped at their designated pick-up locations if crews are unable to access roads

  • Carts have serial numbers and are assigned to the location where they are dropped off. Residents are reminded not to exchange carts with others. They are encouraged to write their address in the space provided and if they move, carts must stay with the property

  • Delivered carts will include information on how to properly set out for collection. Watch for additional information, including upcoming changes to collection days, in the waste management calendar coming to your mailbox in September

If you believe extra carts have been dropped off in error or your location has been missed, please contact our Service Simcoe Contact Centre at [email protected] or 1-800-263-3199.
