Simcoe North’s newly elected MP has been given a seat in his party’s shadow cabinet.

Adam Chambers has been named the Conservative party’s deputy shadow minister for finance and middle class prosperity.

Given his experience with finance in the private sector and his time as an adviser to the late Jim Flaherty, a former finance minister, Chambers sees his new role as a good fit.

“I couldn’t be happier to help on these files,” he said. “Coming out of the pandemic, the economy ought to become the No. 1 issue.”

Chambers is excited to get to work with Carleton MP Pierre Poilievre, who has been named shadow minister for finance and middle class prosperity.

“I’m looking forward to working with Mr. Poilievre, who has been fairly vocal on the economic file over the years. He’s built up a following of people who are concerned about where the country’s going,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity, especially as a rookie member of Parliament, to get involved with some important files and be paired with a senior member of Parliament.”

The ultimate goal, he added, will be to “improve the proposals put forward or provide alternate proposals on which Canadians can judge both the government and the Opposition.”

“Sometimes oppositions can be fairly effective, particularly in minority governments,” he said. “We will collaborate where it makes sense to do so.”

Chambers is encouraged by the makeup of the shadow cabinet, which was announced this week by leader Erin O'Toole.

“There are a number of rookie MPs that are in roles,” he said. “I think it’s a bit of a signal in terms of showcasing some of these new members we have as well as the veterans.”

Despite his new appointment, local constituents will always be top of mind, Chambers said.

“My job is to go there and do a good job for people here in Simcoe North.”
