Snow provides 'wonderful canvas' for avid local hikers

Hikers braved the elements in six-kilometre trek to 'Jarratt Mountain' and the Couchiching Conservancy's East Coulson Swamp

The recent snowfall has not deterred avid local hikers.

Members of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association's Orillia club recently braved snowy and slippery conditions for their popular Tuesday hike.

The hardy walkers of all ages enjoyed a six-kilometre trek to Jarratt Mountain and the Couchiching Conservancy property, the East Coulson Swamp. In the swamp area, the snow weighed down the evergreen branches, making a wonderful canvas to wander through.

Recent trail markings have been upgraded and the loop trails are easy to follow. Later in the hike, the view from the top of the “mountain” was broad and frosty.

The trail follows Simcoe County mountain bike trails through the Schumacher Tract of the Simcoe County Forest.

The club welcomes newcomers and inquiries through its website.
