Snowga fundraiser will help Sharing Place stretch its dollars

Outdoor yoga event taking place Feb. 4 on Leacock Museum grounds; 'The need ... has never been greater than now,' says organizer

A local yoga studio is looking for the community’s help to support the Sharing Place Food Centre in Orillia.

Sunrise Yoga Studio owner Rosanna Shillolo is holding her eighth annual Snowga event benefiting the on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Leacock Museum National Historic Site.

“Everyone gathers in a giant circle, and I lead a regular vinyasa yoga class for about a half-hour to an hour, depending on the temperature. Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather, snowpants, hat, mitts,” said Shillolo.

“We don’t bother with a yoga mat anymore; we just do it in the snow.”

Shillolo started the fundraising event in her backyard eight years ago, and then moved it to the larger museum grounds as participation grew. Last year, 75 people took part.

“It’s a cash donation for the class, a karma class, so any donation amount, with all proceeds going to the Sharing Place, and we have a rep from there here to collect the donations,” she explained.

“The need is so great. It’s never been greater than now. I am really hoping to ... get a really good turnout, bigger than ever before.”

Cash donations are collected so the Sharing Place can buy what it needs most. It helps the organization take advantage of the discounts it has at its disposal.

Shillolo said people of all abilities are welcome.

“No experience is required. You don’t have to be a yogi; you can just come do snow angels if that’s what you want. Just come out and join the community and move your body for a good cause,” she said.

FARE restaurant on the museum grounds will be open after the event for people to buy a hot toddy or have a meal.

Registration for the event, including a waiver to be filled out beforehand, can be completed here.
