Has there ever been a spring more eagerly anticipated than this one? After being cooped up all winter, Canadians are bursting with enthusiasm for the chance to safely spend time outdoors.

And while property upkeep may be the last thing on most people’s minds, there’s no denying our homes need some TLC after all the extra time we’ve been spending inside.

As operations manager of Reliance Home Comfort, Michael Lopes is pleased to present the below checklist to take the guesswork out of spring maintenance this year:

1. HVAC: From cleaning the filter to inspecting the duct work, spring is the ideal time to have your HVAC unit inspected. Don’t wait until the sweltering heat of summer to make sure your AC is working properly!

2. Smoke and CO Detectors: Check all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home as part of routine spring maintenance. A few minutes spent ensuring everything’s working properly could save you more than you know.

3. Windows and Doors: Inspect windowsills, doorways and floors for any signs of moisture build-up or mould that may have accumulated over the winter. Replace your weatherstripping to trap cool air inside when the weather really heats up.

4. Ceiling Fans: Ceiling fans are a cost-effective way to promote healthy air circulation inside the home. Fans should turn counterclockwise in the warmer months to push cool air downwards.

5. Water and Plumbing: Plumbing can take a beating during the winter. Check your pipes, faucets and toilets (and the areas around them) for signs of damage or leaks and contact a professional if needed.

6. Sump pump: Don’t get caught off-guard by April showers! Examine your sump pump for signs of corrosion and rust that might indicate it’s time to repair or replace the unit. Contact a plumber if you suspect a problem.

7. Gutters and Downspouts: Gutter (eavestrough) and downspout maintenance isn’t glamorous but it’s key to any spring cleanup. Standing water leftover from winter can lead to mould and bugs while cracks can lead to damaging leaks around your house. If this DIY job isn’t for you, consider hiring a professional to take it on.

After everything we’ve asked of our homes this year, a little upkeep and TLC can go a long way.
