NEWS RELEASE
MARIPOSA GRANDMOTHERS
*************************
The Mariposa Grandmothers are a group of concerned Orillia grandmothers (and non-grandmothers, too) who fundraise to help other grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa.

The AIDS/HIV epidemic resulted in thousands of children losing their parents. The African grandmothers are raising their grandchildren — sometimes as many as 10 grandchildren for one grandmother. In response to this crisis, the Stephen Lewis Foundation started the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign and groups of Canadian grandmothers began tirelessly fundraising.

The Orillia Grandmothers to Grandmothers’ latest fundraiser is a book exchange and storytelling event on Feb. 25, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church. Guests are invited to bring up to six of their gently used books and exchange them for books donated by others. There will be a large selection of children’s books to choose from.

Susan Charters, a local storyteller, is hosting two sessions of family storytelling at 11 a.m. and noon. Tea/coffee and home-baked treats will be served.

There is no charge for the event but donations are greatly appreciated. All proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign.
