Two Orillia teens put their skills to the test and hit the nail on the head.
Three apiece, actually.
During last month’s Explore the Trades Event at Twin Lakes Secondary School, Grade 9 students Brooklyn Chasse and Daniel Greer were checking out the various stations when they decided to try their hands a nail-driving competition. They had to nail three spikes into a piece of wood. Chasse did so in 4.9 seconds, while Greer took the top time with 3.6 seconds.
The two were rewarded this week with Ridgid 18-volt drill kits, donated by R&F Construction.
“I like doing wood-shop stuff, but I’ve never tried anything like that,” said Greer.
Same goes for Chasse.
“I don’t really do that stuff a lot, so it was a surprise, but I like using tools,” she said.
The trades event was organized by the Orillia and District Construction Association (ODCA) and the Orillia Manufacturers’ Association.
Rick Rimkey, who is president of R&F Construction and the ODCA, presented the drill kits to the students.
“It’s great for them to get involved and use their hands. A lot of kids just use their hands for their phones and computers,” he said.
Rimkey said he was happy to donate the drill kits, and he praised Twin Lakes for being “a great advocate for the trades.”
