Ten new COVID cases in Simcoe-Muskoka today

All the cases are individuals under 45 years old and living in Simcoe County

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 10 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths in its Aug. 5 update.

New cases reported today include: 

  • Barrie (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case transmission is listed as community-acquired (no known link). 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (1): One youth under 18 years old whose case transmission is still under investigation. 
  • Springwater (2): Two people between 18 and 34 years old. One case is linked to travel, the second is under investigation. 
  • Essa (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact and the other is listed as community-acquired. 
  • Tiny (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose transmission is listed as community-acquired. This case was confirmed by the health unit on Jan. 5, but was not previously reported. 
  • New Tecumseth (3):  Two people between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 35 and 44 years old. One case is linked to close contact the other two are still under investigation. 

There are currently 38 active cases in the region. 

There are two people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19-related illnesses. 

According to the health unit, the local reproductive rate is 1.1, meaning for every case of COVID, the infection is passed on to 1.1 other people. The health unit's goal is to sustain a reproductive rate under one. 

Locally, the per cent positivity is 0.4 per cent, which represents the percentage of people who test positive for COVID-19 compared to the number of people tested. The health unit's goal is also to keep this rate below one.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,395 cases of COVID-19 with 12,102 of those cases recovered and 255 cases ending in death.

As of yesterday, 66 per cent of the population 12 years and older living in Simcoe-Muskoka have received both doses of vaccine and 12 per cent have had their first vaccine dose. The remaining 21 per cent is unvaccinated.

The health unit noted a delay in today's reporting and has not posted updated vaccine rates for the region since yesterday.

Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on Aug. 5.
