The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) has confirmed the wild weather that occurred in Thornbury on Friday was in fact a tornado.

“The tornado followed the path through the town before entering the Georgian Bay. The tornado has a preliminary rating of EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale,” stated the unofficial report from NTP to Environment Canada on Monday morning.

Through the Enhanced Fujita scale, Environment Canada uses 31 damage indicators and a wind speed scale that ranges from 90 km/h (low end of EF-0) to more than 315 km/h (high end of EF-5).

According to NTP, the tornado has an estimated maximum wind speed of up to 130 km/hr and travelled a path the length of three kilometres.

Damage in TBM has been reported as minimal, mainly impacting trees, a power line and a street lamp.

The tornado was accompanied by several thunderstorms, large hail and strong winds.
