TECHNICAL STANDARDS AND SAFETY AUTHORITY

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority along with all 27 fire departments across Simcoe County and the District Municipality of Muskoka are banding together to promote carbon-monoxide (CO) safety awareness in their communities. This critical safety campaign will run during the week of March 28-April 4, 2022.

While the seasons change, the risks of CO exposure don’t. Sources of CO exist all over the place including in our cottages, campers, boat cabins and RVs” says Sam Sadeghi, director of TSSA’s Fuels Safety Program. “That’s why it’s so important for everyone to have all of their fuel-burning appliances checked yearly by a TSSA-registered contractor.”

Often dubbed the ‘silent killer’ you won’t even know if it’s there. CO is an invisible, odourless and highly poisonous gas created during the combustion of carbon fuels like natural gas, wood, gasoline, propane, and others. On average, Ontario homes have roughly four to six fuel-burning appliances that produce CO. While these appliances may be safely designed, like many other commonly used items, it is essential that they are properly operated and maintained.

The campaign is emphasizing these two essential steps:

  • Have your fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a certified fuel technician employed by a registered contractor. o To find a TSSA-registered contractor near you use the Find A Registered Contractor Tool at cosafety.ca.
  • Install certified CO alarms in your home, regularly test them and replace in accordance with manufacturer’s instruction.

Stay one step ahead of CO this spring. Take action, think safe.
