A man and a woman are dead after their snowmobiles fell through thin ice during a Christmas day ride just south of Apsley, east of Gravenhurst.

OPP say the pair did not return from their ride after they were last seen about 11 p.m. on Jack Lake and were reported missing.

Officers found the two Wednesday morning around 10 a.m.about nine metres (30 ft) from the shore. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their identities will not be released until the family has been notified.

OPP are advising all snowmobilers to avoid driving on lakes and rivers and suggest that no ice is safe ice, including the local area.
