Something a little different for Mother’s Day, the play, Lilt of Laughter, Trace of Tears, is coming for one performance only to the Edgar Community Hall.
Fresh from sold-out performances in Collingwood and Guelph, this charming one-man show is filled with a host of amusing Irish characters who find themselves challenged by life’s ups and downs.
“I chose the Edgar Community HalI because I believe the building itself becomes the setting for the play, and while the Edgar Hall, formerly SS #6 Oro, a public school, may not have a direct connection to Irish culture, it does serve as a delightful setting for these amusing Irish stories. Community halls are the backbone of Ontario sociability and it is vital that we continue to utilize them,” says Jay Wilson.
“It’s not only about great stories, well told; it’s the entire experience, the Sunday afternoon trip to the country, the feeling of stepping into a different time when the pace was slower. This is why I think it makes for a perfect Mother’s Day gift.”
The play, Lilt of Laughter, Trace of Tears, is a series of wonderful tales coming out of County Mayo and peppered with characters such as Fiddler O’Flaherty, the Widow O’Donnell, Dev Hagerty, Terrible Tom O’Mally, Jimmy Walsh, and even a cat, Francis O’Feline. These characters find themselves in the most amusing situations. These are stories of love, life and death written with that lovely Irish sense of humour and lilting musical language. It is a one-man show that is sure to please.
Of course, you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy these stories and it is not only Mom who will love this show. It is a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, no matter who you are. We all need to be touched by the lilt of laughter or moved by a trace of tears.
Lilt of Laughter, Trace of Tears is coming to the Edgar Community Hall 1167 Old Barrie Rd. for one performance only, Sunday, May 12, Mother’s Day, at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Eventbrite or $25 cash at the door. Seating is limited.
