North Simcoe Victim Services Volunteer services co-ordinator, Sherry Telford, invites the public to the next information night for prospective recruits being held on Aug. 1.

North Simcoe Victim Services is looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of those dealing with tragedy.

An information night for prospective recruits will be held Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the Orillia Recreation Centre on West Street. The agency's volunteer services coordinator, Sherry Telford, says the session will let those interested know more about what the organization offers to the community.

“It will give you an outlook as to if this is something that would be a good fit for you,” she said.

Speaking at the information night will be former volunteer Brooke Leishman, who is now an OPP police officer.

Those who would like to proceed with the non-profit organization following the information night will be trained in the field twice a week for eight weeks, which will begin on Aug. 22.

“We are looking for people who are empathetic and non-judgmental,” Telford said, noting that volunteers need to be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s licence and reliable vehicle.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to help people that are facing the worst day of their lives,” Telford said. “It’s rewarding to be able to support and help others.”

North Simcoe Victim Services is currently lacking volunteers due to retirements. They are looking for 20 people to come on board and currently have 56.

“We work alongside first-responders,” Telford explained. “They will call us out to sudden deaths, sexual assault, anything crime-related or tragic circumstances.”

Telford says even if volunteers help one person during their time with North Simcoe Victim Services, the experience will be rewarding.

“It allows you to give back to your community.”

Those planning to attend the information night are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected].
