VIDEO: Orillia OPP making efforts to tackle mental health crisis

The second edition of Couchiching Cops in Conversation focuses on how police and mental health professionals respond to mental health calls in Orillia

How do police respond to mental health calls, and how do mental health professionals assist them in their work? How prevalent are mental health calls in the Orillia area? How has the police response to mental health changed over the years?

These questions are among the many discussed during the newest episode of Couchiching Cops in Conversation, a podcast made in partnership with the OPP’s Orillia detachment and OrilliaMatters to discuss local crime issues and the work police carry out in the community.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Orillia OPP Const. John Barrett and CMHA crisis worker Marcy Wilson-Beck join reporter Greg McGrath-Goudie to discuss the role police and mental health professionals play in responding to mental health crises.

A variety of resources are available to residents experiencing mental health crises beyond the OPP. Some of these are as follows:

  • Canadian Mental Health Association: 705-329-5846
  • CMHA Crisis Line: 705-728-5044, or 1-888-893-8333
  • North Simcoe Victim Services: 705-325-5578
  • Hope for Wellness Indigenous Helpline: 1-855-242-3310
  • Good2Talk, for post-secondary students: 1-866-925-5454

Residents with questions about police and mental health – or about local crime issues and the OPP’s work – are encouraged to reach out to Greg McGrath-Goudie at [email protected] for possible inclusion during future episodes of the podcast.
