Green Haven Shelter for Women (GHSW), a leading local non-profit organization dedicated to ending gender-based violence, is thrilled to announce its upcoming annual fundraising event, Walk This Way to Open Doors for Women, happening on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023 at Couchiching Beach Park in Orillia.

The event aims to raise awareness, show solidarity, and provide vital support to survivors of gender-based violence in our community.

Gender-based violence remains a pervasive issue affecting countless individuals, families, and communities in Orillia and the surrounding area. Walk This Way is an opportunity for community to come together, stand against violence, and support survivors on their journey towards healing and empowerment.

At Walk This Way, participants from all walks of life will stand side by side, symbolizing our collective commitment to creating a society free from gender-based violence. By taking part in this walk, attendees will help raise funds to support essential programs and services for survivors, including emergency shelter, basic needs, counselling, systems navigation, child and youth support, and resource sharing.

Kyla Csumrik, GHSW board member and fundraising committee member, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Walk This Way is a vital initiative that allows us to rally the community around survivors of gender-based violence. It is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to ending violence and abuse, supporting survivors, and fostering a culture of respect and equality.”

Walk This Way to Open Doors for Women is a 2,000-step walk along the waterfront, with a warm-up activity, opportunities to advocate for and empower survivors, enjoy food and drinks, win prizes, and so much more.

“Join us as we walk towards a brighter future, one where we can all live free from violence and abuse. Together, we can have a lasting impact in the lives of survivors and create a safer, more inclusive society for all,” said Natalie Harris, community development manager with GHSW.

Green Haven Shelter for Women encourages local businesses, community organizations, and individuals to get involved and make a difference. Local leaders can join as teams, sponsors, volunteers, or make pledges to their friends and family.

“Green Haven offers sponsorship opportunities to local businesses as a means of increasing visibility for your business or organization. Your sponsorship sends a powerful message of solidarity, support, and hope to survivors. We are truly grateful to the sponsors who are dedicated to giving back to the community and calling for a safer community for all Orillians,” said Harris.
