The 17th annual Barrie Walk for ALS is taking place Saturday, June 9 at the HiWay Pentecostal Church – 50 Anne St. N., Barrie.

Last year we received tremendous support from the Barrie and surrounding Simcoe communities for our 16th annual Barrie Walk for ALS, raising $139,000.

The top fundraising team last year was Team Peacock who walked for Jeff Peacock of Orillia, who is still battling ALS.

Proceeds from the walk provide services and support for people living with ALS and fund research.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) is a brutal and unforgiving disease with no cure. It gradually paralyzes people because the brain is no longer able to communicate with the muscles of the body that we are typically able to move at will.

Over time, as the muscles of the body break down, someone living with ALS will lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, swallow, and eventually breathe. Approximately 1,000 Canadians are diagnosed with ALS each year and 80 per cent of them die within two to five years.

This walk brings people together to show their support for people living with ALS, honour those who have passed away, and share their hope for a future without ALS.
