Washago pumps up recreation with latest attraction

Pump track open at Washago Centennial Park; 'We heard loud and clear that children and young teens were looking for more opportunities'

A new attraction in Washago is giving residents another reason to get outside and be active.

A pump track that was installed in Centennial Park officially opened to the public on the weekend. It allows bicyclists, roller-bladers and others to test their skills on the hilly track’s sharp, banked turns.

Severn Township council reached out to the community to determine what they wanted to see at the park. A public session was held, and councillors even pitched the idea to students at Severn Shores Public School.

“They were super-stoked,” said Coun. Sarah Valiquette-Thompson. “We heard loud and clear that children and young teens were looking for more opportunities.”

While youth were top of mind during the process, the asphalt track has been attracting people of all ages, she said.

Washago residents aren’t the only ones who are excited about the pump track. Those who live in the rapidly growing Westshore/Cumberland Beach area “said they couldn’t wait to bring their kids there,” Valiquette-Thompson said, adding seating will soon be installed for parents.
