Waypoint virtual course gives first-aid tips for mental health

Participants will learn six-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, friends and neighbours cope with mental health or substance-use issues

Waypoint Centre of Mental Health Care is hosting a mental-health first aid course.

Registration is open for virtual sessions that take place next Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on each day. Completion of a two-hour, self-directed prerequisite module is also required.

During the sessions, participants will learn a six-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, friends, employees, neighbours and others cope with mental-health or substance-use problems.

During the sessions, course participants will learn how to recognize encourage that person to:

  • Talk about declines in their mental well-being
  • Discuss professional and other supports
  • Reach out to these supports
  • Assist in a mental health or substance use crisis
  • Use MHFA actions to maintain one's own mental well-being
