The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in partnership with the City of Orillia and Townships of Oro-Medonte, Ramara, Severn, and Springwater, will be offering a free webinar focused on new rules pertaining to third party advertising during the 2018 Municipal Election.

A third party advertisement is an advertisement in any broadcast, print, electronic or other medium that has the purpose of promoting, supporting or opposing a municipal and/or school board candidate, as well as a yes/no question on a ballot. There are legislative requirements for both the advertiser and the publisher/broadcaster.

The webinar will take place on Friday, April 13, 2018, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the City of Orillia’s Council Chamber, located at 50 Andrew St. S., Orillia.

During this webinar, representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs will present information and answer questions about the Municipal Elections Act’s new framework for third party advertising. The framework came into effect on April 1, 2018, so that the rules will be in place for the 2018 municipal election.

“We are pleased that the Ministry of Municipal Affairs is offering this informative webinar in an effort to educate individuals, corporations, trade unions and election administrators about these new third party advertising provisions,” said Janet Nyhof, Deputy Clerk for the City of Orillia.  “We encourage broadcasters and publishers to also attend as there are requirements they must follow as well.”

To register for this webinar, individuals are asked to email Janet Nyhof at [email protected] with their name, address and phone number or call 705-325-2108.  Citizens can also visit orillia.ca/election2018 for other election details.

The 2018 municipal election takes place on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018.
