West Street bridge construction forcing ramp closures next week

Off-ramps will be closed until Oct. 3; Ministry official says construction of bridge, with sidewalk and bike lane, is 'on track and on schedule'

The on and off ramps on northbound Highway 11, from West St. N. in Orillia to Burnside Line in Severn Township, will be closing next week for construction. They will close Sept. 19 and re-open on Oct. 3.

“We will try to push to get that done,” said Roger Singh, the consultant representative on site on behalf of the Ministry of Transportation. “We will get the new ramps in place before the first Monday morning of October.”

Singh says construction on the West Street bridge over Highway 11 is coming along nicely.

“It’s going good,” he said. “We are pretty well on track and on schedule to have it completed next year in August.”

Once completed, Singh says the construction will significantly improve everyone’s commute over the West Street bridge.

“There were issues before like no sidewalk and no bicycle lane,” he said. “All of these are being added to this new bridge.”

The new bridge will be slightly higher Singh says, allowing for more vehicles to travel through safely.

“There is also a brand new west-south ramp,” he said. “We’ve added a couple of speed change lanes, too.”
