Janet Sumner will be guest speaker at Couchiching Conservancy's annual general meeting March 2

The Couchiching Conservancy will celebrate another year of conservation work and their 25th anniversary at the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

The meeting will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Hawk Ridge Golf & Country Club in Orillia from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. and there will be time after the meeting to socialize. Last year, over 210 people attended the meeting.

If this is your first time hearing about the Conservancy, or if you have known them for years, the Annual Meeting is a great way to catch up on what is happening in our region. The meeting is open to all to attend. Members have voting rights.

There will be table displays and photos for volunteering, Nature Reserves, donations and membership, the Heartwood Fund and other topics. This is an opportunity to talk with staff and volunteers to learn about how to help make a better future.

Janet Sumner will join the Conservancy as guest speaker. She has more than 25 years experience as an environmentalist. She has been the Executive Director of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Wildlands League since 2003.

In 2017, Janet was appointed co-chair of the National Advisory Panel (NAP) with a mandate to provide recommendations on how Canada can meet the Aichi Target 11, protecting 17 per cent terrestrial lands and inland waters in Canada by 2020. Janet is an expert negotiator, strategist and communicator with considerable policy reform experience.

Janet believes the two greatest environmental challenges of our time are climate change and biodiversity loss. The solutions to both include protecting nature and addressing our land use footprint.

Janet will share her presentation, What the Planet Needs. From southern Canada to the Arctic, what nature needs is protection. Find out how important protecting nature in Canada is to not only regional biodiversity but the impact for the planet and the hemisphere.
