Yoga in the snow event this weekend will support Sharing Place

'It’s a nice community event that brings people together and it’s something that we can do safely during the pandemic era,' says Snowga event coordinator

Yoga lovers will be getting bundled up to go play in the snow Saturday for the sixth annual ‘Snowga’ event, a fundraiser for The Sharing Place Food Centre.

“It’s like a traditional yoga class, but at the end, we do some snow angels and have some fun in the snow,” explains event coordinator and Sunrise Yoga Studio instructor, Rosanna Shillolo.

Two different ‘Snowga’ sessions are available to the public - the first on Feb. 20 at Sunrise Yoga, and the second on Feb. 28 at the Leacock Museum property. Both events kick off at 1 p.m.

“It’s so much fun and so playful. I always tell people to dress warmly and dress like they are going out to play in the snow, and then they can be really uninhibited with their poses and enjoy a fun yoga flow,” Shillolo said.

“It’s a nice community event that brings people together and it’s something that we can do safely during the pandemic era.”

Because of the pandemic, there are some changes to this year’s event. Only 25 people can participate at the in-person event, however, everyone is welcome to follow along virtually.

“The City of Orillia is including it with their winter active events (and) a city representative will be live-streaming the event for people who want to follow along from their backyard or a park, which I think will be great,” Shillolo said.

Admission for the event is granted on any cash donation to The Sharing Place Food Centre. Last year, the event raised $1,000.

“I know that there is such a need for food service in our community, especially now when people are facing unemployment or financial hardships because of the pandemic,” Shillolo explained.
