Young dancers get 'celebrity' treatment (4 photos)

Fundraiser for The Dance Space in Orillia supports competitive team

An Orillia dance studio celebrated its first anniversary Monday night with a pizza party, of sorts.

The competitive dancers from The Dance Space were “celebrity servers” at Boston Pizza, which donated a portion of its sales to the cause. The fundraiser will help the team with travel and costume/equipment costs.

“This is the first time we’ve done an event like this, so the kids are pretty excited,” said Martine Couture, who does administrative work for the studio, where her daughter dances.

Money was also raised through a raffle and silent auction, with about 20 local businesses providing items to be sold.

The studio, on Ontario Street, offers instruction in various styles of dance for children and adults. In addition to competitive dancing, it offers a recreational program.

There are more than 100 dancers at the studio, which was founded by Kim Dodson and Wendy Laidlaw, and they are hoping to see it continue to grow, said Couture.
