As a new year begins, Austin Walker, 7, of Orillia, and his family, look back with appreciation on the support they have received from The War Amps.

Austin was born missing part of both hands and, as a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, is eligible for financial assistance for the cost of artificial limbs and recreational devices.

He also attends regional CHAMP seminars where “Champs” and their parents learn about the latest in artificial limbs, dealing with teasing and bullying, and parenting an amputee child.

“We attended our third seminar last year, and it has been very informative once again. The seminars are allowing Austin to form strong bonds with other kids who are just like him,” says mom, Heather. “Thank you so much to everyone who supports The War Amps.”

The War Amps entered its second century of service this year, and there is still much to do to ensure amputees, like Austin, have the artificial limbs or devices they need.

“The War Amps receives no government grants, but with the public’s continued support of the Key Tag and Address Label Service, our vital programs for amputees will carry on long into the future,” says Danita Chisholm, Executive Director of the CHAMP Program.
