Channel Cats lap up chance to swim multiple events at pentathlon

14-year-old Sam Pecorella also competed at his first provincial level qualifying meet and will compete at Eastern Canadians with teammate Taryn Fenton

The Orillia Channel Cats Swim Club attended two competitions over the weekend.       

Sam Pecorella, 14, competed at his first provincial level qualifying meet, the Ontario Swimming Championships, which includes some of the fastest age group swimmers in the province. He placed 14th in the 100- and 200-metre backstroke, dropping 4.5 seconds off the 100 back, and 13 seconds off the 200 back from times he achieved in January of this year. 

Pecorella also qualified for Eastern Canadian Championships in the 100 backstroke which is later this month in Quebec. In the 100 freestyle event he achieved a 4.5 second best time.      

During the same weekend, swimmers from Senior Novice, Bronze, Silver and Gold attended the Barrie Trojan Pentathlon. This meet offers a sprint distance (50 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 100 Individual Medley), middle distance (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 Individual Medley), and Ironman Pentathlon (200 butterfly, 400 Individual Medley, 800 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 1500 freestyle).

Gold swimmer Maelle Bouchard achieved her goal of racing in all 15 events offered over four sessions. Bouchard pushed through and did an excellent job demonstrating true perseverance and adversity.       

Some of the club's 12-and-under swimmers also achieved more Festival standards: Brady Bell added 100 free and 200 IM to his event list at Festivals; Jace Black added 50 free and 100 IM to his Festival events and Harrison Levene made the 800 freestyle and set a new 11/12 boys club record 10:47.87.  

Swimmers from Senior Novice, Bronze Silver and Gold raced one or more sessions at the Pentathlon and also did great pushing through on very little recovery time. 

The following swimmers were in attendance: Fedor Radzievskii, Anna Crawley, Ivy Lowry,  Maelle Mooney, Carmen Conroy, Harrison Levene, Boyd Brown, Hartley Russell, Georgia Cameron, Margot Cameron, Niko Plett, Riley Shore, Charlie Timms, Grace Hunter, Cohen Greer, Emma Edgerton, Lily Edgerton, Maelle Bouchard,  Evangeline Cooke, Sophie Brown, Isabella Brown, Rydaar Watt, Katie Heckendorn, Taryn Fenton, Whitney Anderson, Christopher Dorevich, Cheyanne Hawrysio, Nadine Ackert, Kajun Butler, Brady Bell, Trenton Shepherd, Jackson Denne, Jace Black, Caden Stuart, Catherine Shaw, Anna Holton, Adair Wieclawek and Ava Fairgrieve.    

Swimmers Taryn Fenton and Sam Pecorella will be travelling to Quebec later this month to compete at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships.
