The Orillia Rowing Club is the recipient of a grant from Rowing Canada Aviron that will help promote the sport for certain groups. The funding is part of Sport Canada’s “Community Sport for All” initiative.

With this funding, 20 local elementary students aged 11 and up will be able to attend one week of rowing day camp, which they likely would not otherwise be able to do. They will learn a new sport, learn about teamwork in crew rowing, be active, and have lots of fun! There is some funding available for any of these interested students to continue rowing into September.

As part of this camp initiative there is funding for a new coastal doubles rowing shell that will be used for this day camp, future day camps, and many other rowers in the future. This new rowing shell is an opportunity for beginners and other rowers to try a new type of rowing shell. This type of rowing will become part of the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

The other part of the grant is introducing indoor rowing in elementary schools in Orillia and area. The focus is on introducing more girls to the sport, but both girls and boys will be taught how to properly row on a rowing machine as part of a class activity.

Funding from a previous Rowing Canada grant in 2022/2023 enabled the Orillia Rowing Club to purchase 12 rowing machines and a small trailer to take this sport to the schools and introduce it to as many girls/youth as possible. Now, we are able to keep going into the schools and hope to visit up to 14 elementary schools by September.

"The impact of this Rowing Canada grant cannot be underestimated,” said Glorilyn Cabugao, president of the Orillia Rowing Club. “This grant will help us offer the sport of rowing, both on water and indoor to more youth.”

The Orillia Rowing Club’s mission statement:
Pursuing the joy of rowing in a welcoming environment.
Empowering and inspiring crews to learn and reach their full potential in a healthy life-long sport.
Building community on the water.
