Hardwood athletes ski to four gold medals at nationals

Team Hardwood athletes shone at Canadian National Cross Country Ski Championship in Quebec

Team Hardwood skiers travelled to Gatineau, Quebec to compete in the Canadian National Cross Country Ski Championships and the team won four gold medals.

Lenny Valjas, a two-time Olympian, won the 10-kilometre Classic, Team Sprints and the overall combined title.

Bob Thompson, an Olympic hopeful, teamed up with Valjas to win the Team Sprints and he also won a silver medal in the 10-kilometre Classic.

Sully MacDonald won a gold medal in the midget boys three-kilometre Skate race.

Team Hardwood athlete Jessica Roach, a first-year senior women's competitor, was 25th in the 30-kilometre Classic, 23rd in the 10-kilometre Skate, 30th in the 1.3-kilometre Sprint Skate and 14th in the Overall Combined for U23 women.

Alec MacLean was 26th in the junior men’s 10-kilometre Classic, 23rd in the 15-kilometre Skate and 23rd in the 1.4-kilometre Sprint Skate and 19th in the overall event.

Other Team Hardwood members included Leyla Barber, Declan Barber, Sierra MacDonald, Fiona Shearing, Maeve Conaghan, Robert Raikou, Reid Kidner, Liam Ryan, Justine Hastings and Ben Loews.

Three Team Hardwood racers went on to compete at the World Cup in Quebec City: Valjas, Thompson and Scott Hill.
